Thick black smoke spews into the sky over the Syrian city of Homs.

This amateur video, which Reuters cannot independently verify, purports to show shelling by government forces.

Syrian troops have repeatedly targeted Homs, one of the centres of the anti-Assad revolt.

During an official visit to Moscow, a senior US representative says that so far US cooperation with Russia in ending the bloodshed in Syria has been difficult.

"We have a difference of approach, clearly, on Syria, but there's not been an end to communication between Moscow and Washington on this matter. We are talking very very closely every day about what's happening in Syria and trying to make common cause where we can make common cause, but it's clear that there are areas where we have a very significant disagreement on how to handle the Assad regime."

UN peace envoy Kofi Annan has called on Syria to withdraw heavy weapons and allow humanitarian assistance.

However he stopped short of insisting President Bashar al-Assad step down.
