"The size of this victory by the vote of the people shows the immense expectation of the population. I am taking all measures tonight so that a new era can commence for Senegal."

He beat out incumbent Abdoulaye Wade, who he described as out of touch with the needs of Senegal's people.

The 50-year-old opposition candidate advocates lowering the cost of living and helping the poor.

His supporters - including singer Youssou N'dour- were ecstatic, calling his win a victory for Senegal.

"Today is a victory of the Senegalese people and I'm proud to have played my part in it. Because I'm not the only one."

The elections were the latest test for democracy in a region plagued with violence and corruption.
