Nuclear summit beings amid N. Korea tensions

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak welcomes Chinese President Hu Jintao to the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit.

More than 50 world leaders are attending the summit, including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

The March 26-27 meetings will focus on measures to protect nuclear materials and facilities and prevent illicit trafficking.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency is also in attendance, as is U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

North Korea will not attend the summit, and although its nuclear weapons programme is not on the formal agenda, their announcement of an April missile test is now expected to take centre stage.

U.S. President Barack Obama has said the long-range test would violate U.N. security council resolutions and expressed hope for a diplomatic solution.
