It was the summer of 1980, a dry heat suffocating Salt Lake City with the barest breeze drifting off the lake. In a quiet room in town, a woman is playing the saxophone, nine months pregnant and watching dry lightning light the summer sky.
In the next moment, she is rushed to the hospital, a baby girl ushered into the world on the blue notes of a saxophone solo. To say that Tara Craig was born into music is more than an expression.
Richard May of the Songwriters TV Series recently called Tara "one of the most vibrant and pensive songwriters emerging" and this emergence is a long time coming. The soundtrack of Tara's childhood was a powerful one: Miles Davis on her father's scratchy record player, Joni Mitchell songs on her mother's upright piano.
At the age of thirteen, Tara began writing her own music as an outlet to deal with her parents' divorce. As a pensive high schooler, Tara spent hours recording on old cassette tapes, over dubbing harmonies, and passing out tapes in the windowless halls of her high school.
It was Tara's freshman year of college when she met her first classical guitar. The setting was Southern California and the match was made in heaven. That was the year that Tara formed her first band, a trio composed of Tara, Meg Baier, and another friend. They recorded their first demo in the bathroom of Tara's college dorm.
Soon, Tara took her guitar and turned to the streets of Laguna Beach, her soulful songs and raucous melodies drawing a crowd on the tree-lined boulevards, turning Forest Ave into her own Carnegie Hall.
Tara Craig burst onto the Austin music scene in 2007, captivating audiences with a voice that is equal parts soulful and vulnerable, and lyrics that come straight from the gut. From empowering spirituals to quiet love songs, there's an intimate, timeless quality to Tara's sound. There's tremendous variety in Tara's songs, but they're each tied together by a kind of longing— a longing for family, freedom, God, and unrequited love.
Tara is backed by drummer Marco Arroyo and bassist Wayne Decker. Marco, a Texas native, comes to Tara from the Austin-based Goodbye Beautiful and Wayne has been active in Austin studios and on its stages since the early '90s. Tara Craig's debut full length album, "As the Leaves Were Changing", was released August 20, 2010.
