Former Nazi guard Demjanjuk dead at 91

John Demjanjuk, convicted last year for his role in killing 28,000 Jews at a Nazi death camp during World War Two, died on Saturday.

He was 91 years old and died in in a care home in southern Germany.

A Munich court convicted him in May 2011 of helping to kill the Jews at a death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. He was sentenced to five years in prison, but was freed because of his age.

His defense lawyers had begun appeal proceedings against the judgment, but there was no ruling on this at the time of his death.

He was extradited from the United States in 2009.
