A barrage of artillery fire launched 30km east of Seoul.

This is a live firing exercise conducted by the U.S. and South Korea - part of their annual joint military drills.

Two-hundred-and-ten U.S. soldiers and 90 troops from South Korea took part.

North Korea has threatened sacred war against the South, yet Pyongyang recently agreed with Washington to suspend major parts of its nuclear programme.

U.S. soldiers here are remaining cautious.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. LIEUTENANT MAJOR ADAM ROBINSON:

"The purpose of this is to deploy Korea from the United States and to combine with our Korean counterparts, and to show North Koreans that we're united and we can fight together. We will fight and we will win."

There are around 30,000 U.S. soldiers based in South Korea.

These drills are scheduled to run until the end of April.
