Monks march against US resolution on Sri Lanka

Hundreds of Buddhist monks march to the U.S. embassy in Colombo calling on Washington to stay out of Sri Lanka's affairs.

They're protesting a U.S. led resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

(SOUNDBITE) (Sinhala) SENIOR BUDDHIST MONK, VENERABLE PROFESSOR NAGODA AMARAWANSA:

"America is interfering in our country. Today these monks are from the western province, there are 26,000 to 30,000 Buddhist monks throughout the country who are ready to take to the streets."

The resolution calls on Colombo to implement good governance and reconciliation with minority Tamils.

The Indian Ocean island is also under heavy international pressure to investigate alleged war crimes in the final phase of its bloody civil war.

The Sri Lankan government admits its troops killed the majority of the Tamil Tigers' leadership in 2009, but says it acted in accordance with international law.
