World remembers Japan's double disaster

A moment of silence in Paris for victims of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last year.

This was one of several ceremonies around the world on Sunday - the first anniversarry of the disaster.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) JAPANESE AMBASSADOR TO FRANCE ICHIRO KOMATSU, SAYING:

"I would like all the people affected in Japan to know that people all around the world still care."

In the United States, New York's Japanese community gathered for a memorial - and urged the world not to forget that thousands are still grappling with the effects of the disaster.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AK AKEMI KAKIHARA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TOGETHER FOR 3.11, SAYING:

"And we also send our strong message to those who are living in effected area that we haven't forgotten you. Together we can overcome and recover Japan."

Meanwhile in the Philippines, a livelier ceremony.

Hundreds took to the streets for a traditional Japanese dance meant to celebrate Japan's recovery from the disaster.

Sixteen thousands people were killed in the earthquake and tsunami, and over 3,000 are still officially missing.
