Over 10,000 Chilean activists marked International Women's Day on Thursday (March 8) with a massive march in downtown Santiago.

Participants from a number of feminist, social, and union groups demonstrated together calling on more women to take political action and occupy positions of power in Chilean politics.

The activists set off rom Plaza Italia and went through the city, arriving at Moneda Palace.

There, a small group of protesters tried to move barriers set up around the palace and authorities detained at least one woman.

Authorities fired tear gas and water cannon at the crowd.

Protesters also set fire to furniture they raided from a bank.

Demonstrators said economic, social, political and cultural institutions in the country uphold a male driven society and rampant gender inequality.
