The 85-year-old queen was accompanied by her husband Philip and Catherine, the wife of grandson Prince William.

The Royal party headed to De Montfort University, where they were greeted by cheerful crowds. They were treated to musical and dance performances as they made their way into the building.

The next stop the Leicester Cathedral.

Well wishers line the streets.

Inside the Cathedral a multi faith ceremony to mark the Queens Jubilee.

The Queen will continue her four-month tour to cities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, as part of celebrations for her reign which began on February 6, 1952.

The diamond jubilee festivities will have their biggest momentum over four days in June, including a 1,000-ship pageant on the River Thames through London and a concert at Buckingham Palace.
