Islamic militant Umar Patek arrives at court in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The 45-year-old is accused of making bombs that exploded at Bali nightclubs packed with Australian tourists in 2002, killing over 200 people.

He's also accused of mixing chemicals for 13 bombs that detonated in five churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve in 2000, claiming 15 lives.

Patek's trial is continuing after judges dismissed his lawyer's request for the trial to be dropped.

Four survivors of the Christmas Eve bombings were sworn in as witnesses.

A retired army official said one of the bombs that went off had been placed in his car.

(SOUNDBITE)(Bahasa Indonesia) WITNESS PETER BOROH, SAYING:

"I smelled TNT during mass. I told my wife next to me, 'Let's go, we have to leave now'. Then I heard a loud explosion."

Another witness said he saw smoke coming from the car, and a large explosion.

Patek was caught in January last year by Pakistani authorities in the same garrison town where U.S. forces later shot dead Osama bin Laden.
