ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

A 61-year-old man armed with a hunting gun was holed up with two hostages at this plastics factory on Thursday (March 1) where he had previously worked.

Earlier he had shot and wounded his former boss and another worker.

Officers said the man was protesting over the loss of his job about seven months ago.

Police surrounded the factory in the northern industrial town of Komotini as the drama unfolded.

The town is one of the worst affected in the whole of Greece, where unemployment is running at 21 percent and rising.

A police negotiator was trying to talk the unnamed man into releasing his hostages on Thursday.

Of the two men wounded in the drama, neither was seriously hurt.

One was shot in the leg, the other was hit in the stomach by shrapnel.

The drama ended in the early hours of Friday (March 2) when the gunman released his hostages and gave himself up to police.
