BROUGHT TO YOU IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE RHYTHM BUILDING at MUSIC ROW in NASHVILLE TENNESSEE and THERECORDSHOPNASHVILLE.COM

It's taken me a longer road than some to get here. Let's begin with that. Had I attempted this all when I was twenty, it would have sounded very different. There were too many events I hadn't yet processed. Things I hadn't looked at, accepted, and cleared. The death of my mother, a subsequent flirtation with controlled substances, going blind in one eye, and ongoing collisions with faith, love, and what exactly I wanted to do with the rest of my life... to name a few.

Growing up in a suitcase, it was easiest observing people from afar. And so when I came to Nashville several years ago, I couldn't help but play the role of the detached flaneur/voyeur. I spent much of my time in awe, watching real writers and musicians lay it out on the table every night at venues like The Station Inn and The Bluebird Cafe, while I seemed content enough to dress up in costumes and play someone else's songs at fraternity parties.

It wasn't until recently, when the remnants of my jam-rock college band finally biodegraded - when I first contacted Jen Gunderman (The Jayhawks, Dag) and we set about to make an honest record - that I finally made some decisions: first, stop observing passively and start writing songs that originate from some form of truth; second: find a voice for this music, and sing it out as loud or as quiet or raw or broken as it needed to be.

The next step has been the fun part, to say the least. After putting together a multi-talented band of old and new friends, I've now started bringing the music to the folks with big ears and open hearts. And it's all feeling pretty good at these shows, like when you drive with your hand flying out the window. So you could say this is a beginning of sorts.
