Indonesian police on Wednesday (February 22) were trying to contain rioting at a prison on the resort island of Bali after inmates took over the building and set it on fire.

Police shot two of the inmates in the legs when they were confronted by a mob wielding sticks and hurling bricks.

Officers stormed Kerobokan jail after the trouble erupted on Tuesday.

Police said the prison warders fled and the inmates seized control after they set fire to offices.

A police spokesman said conflict at the jail first started a week earlier, when two inmates armed with knives fought each other, leading to a split in the wider prison population which developed into a bigger fight between two rival groups.

The jail is home to 1, 200 inmates.
