North Korea celebrates the 70th birthday of late leader Kim Jong-il.
The "dear leader", as he is known in the reclusive state, died two months ago and his son Kim Jong-un rose to power.
The young Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, led the celebrations for his father's birthday with high ranking military officials.
North Korea's military has pledged its loyalty to the Kim dynasty, and the new leader now rules the country's 1.2 million strong army.
Kim Jong-un attended another military gathering at the memorial palace where his father's and grandfather's bodies lay in state.
Jong-un, who was named "The Great Successor" in December, is already showing himself to be a different character than his father.
The young leader has moved quickly from mourning to action whereas Kim Jong-il disappeared from public view for 100 days following the death of his father 17 years ago.
