All I ever wanted to do was play. I can't remember a time when I didn't. I started singing as soon as I could talk, which in my family is no surprise. Ha ha... I've been going to rehearsals since I was old enough to walk.
My whole family is musical. My dad and stepdad grew up together playing Levon and Robbie until they started writing their own music. The band was The Last Words. You still catch them on radio from time-to-time in Toronto.
My mom was a singer with a talent for harmony and a great sense of what makes a good song. She's still my first audience for new ones. If mom likes it, it's okay to play for everyone else.
It was piano first. When I was 4, I started classical, conservatory lessons. It was tough and I hated to practice (still do actually), but it gave me my foundation and taught me how to use my ears.
When I was thirteen, I quit piano and picked up the guitar. If I remember correctly, the reason had more to do with getting girls than making music, but it didn't take long to fall in love with the guitar. To this day I'm seldom without one. Since then, I've also fallen for bass, percussion, harmonica, mandolin, banjo, ukulele.... basically, if it makes noise -- I'll have a go.
Lately it's all about writing. I've been strongly influenced by friends like Tomi Swick, Andrew Mactaggart and Mike Scime to put some songs down and get moving. I've played literally thousands of shows in my life and feel like I'm just starting to get it. I hope I always feel that way.
