PRESENTED BY CHERYL
Jake Ian is a guitarist/ singer/ songwriter hailing from Warspite, Alberta, a small hamlet of 48 people located 100 km north east of Edmonton. Growing up in the country, Ian realized the value of hard work at a young age and this has proven invaluable in his musical endeavors. Ian began his music career in High School starting the legendary Edmonton punk rock act, PiND, in which he was the lead guitarist, lead vocalist and chief songwriter. His songs contain an air of urgency and his performances convey an intense passion that carries his beautiful yet somber melodies to the ears of the listeners. Able to pick a guitar and blow a harmonica with the best of them, Jake Ian brings a certain grit to folk music, something that can be attributed to his punk rock background. In early July of 2008 Ian released his debut album entitled Sunset Estates, the name of the trailer park in which he lived while writing the songs on the album. The release of the album was followed by a Canadian tour, hitting many outdoor festivals and sharing the stage with such artists as Gordie Tentrees, Hawksley Workman and Bill Bourne. Sunset Estates was widely accepted and praised for its sparse and emotionally driven songs. In November 2009, Ian released his sophomore album, An Awful Sky, which proved to be a huge step forward in terms of song quality and instrumentation. Jake Ian is currently working full time in Edmonton as a high School teacher and is also finishing up material for a third album which he plans to release in 2011.
