The chief advisor of Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo was among those killed when the plane carrying several government officials crashed near Bukavu on Sunday (February 12).
Augustin Katumba Mwanke was regarded by many as the power behind the throne, according to leaked 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable.
He was a former governor of the copper-rich region of Katanga and retained major influence in the country's minerals sector.
The pilot of the aircraft also died.
Several other people have been injured in the crash, including Finance Minister Matata Ponyo Mapon and roving ambassador Antoine Nadine Ngonda.
Some locals said the aircraft appeared to overshoot the runway.
