Indonesia's Mount Lokon erupts

Mount Lokon on Indonesia's Sulawesi island erupted at at 8.20 am local time on Friday (February 10.

It was seen spewing hot lava and volcanic ash as high as two kilometres (1.25 miles) into the air.

The authorities said there were no immediate casualties reported.

People living in the vicinity of the volcano have been advised to keep at least 2.5 km (1.5 miles) away from the crater.

The 1,580-metre volcano located in Tomohon district is 20 km (12 miles) southwest from the capital of Manado.

The volcano last erupted in 1992 when hundreds were evacuated from Manado and the surrounding areas.

Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, is on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is frequently prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis and floods.
