A Gucci artisan, displaced from the factory in Florence to stormy London, had come here to set up a mini version of his workshop in the Sloane St store. The object of the exercise was so customers could see at first hand how luxury Italian leather comes into being: not from the cold metal of machinery, but from the implausibly smooth hands of the likes of Massimiliano Cambi.
