STORY: The film adaptation of John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy had its German premiere on Tuesday (January 24) with freshly Oscar nominated Gary Oldman still buzzing from the news.
The film, set in the Cold War era of the 1970s, is a slow-paced and gripping tale of the character George Smiley, who is brought out of retirement by The Circus - an in house name for the British Intelligence Services, MI6, to hunt down a mole in the highest echelons of the organisation.
Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy's most famous adaptation to date has probably been the BBC's 1979 mini series, which cast Alec Guinness as Smiley. It was even said that Le Carre was so impressed he absorbed Guinness's portrayal of Smiley into his later books with the character.
On the back of recent spy franchises like the Bourne trilogy and the latest James Bonds, Tinker, Tailor seems to glide slowly past, capturing the silences of the Cold War, eschewing fast paced action scenes.
British actor, Oldman, who plays a mild-mannered but steely spy hunter in the film received his first ever Oscar nomination on the day of the Berlin premiere.
"It feels very good and like I said, my manager came in all excited, with I think, I think there were tears in his eyes. I think he was a little watery-eyed when he came in and was thrilled and said: 'You are an Oscar nominee', which is.. I never heard those words before so it is quite thrilling," Oldman said.
"Pretty amazing! it is the sort of top-of-the-pop-of-the-most, the Oscar. So, you know. We are very happy!" he added.
