Path of destruction left by clashes in Syria

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
The remains of a destroyed armoured vehicle lay in the street in a neighbourhood in Homs on Monday (January 23), almost a week after Syrian army defectors attacked a government forces position.
Residents and the Syrian observatory for Human Rights said five soldiers where killed in the ambush.
The shell-pocked and blackened buildings in the street bore testimony to the intensity of the gunbattle.
The pre-Baath party era flag, adopted by the protest movement, flutters above the buildings in the street, signalling that the area is now controlled by protesters and the soldiers who say they deserted the army because of the government's harsh crackdown.
Syrian President Bashar Assad, 46, has faced more than 10 months of protests against his rule and a growing armed rebellion.
The United Nations says 5,000 people have been killed in the security crackdown. Syrian authorities say they are fighting foreign-backed armed "terrorists" who have killed 2,000 soldiers and policemen.
