Rescue workers in the Russian city of Bryansk continue their search for an 18-month-old boy who was swept away in the drainage system after a sink hole opened up beneath him.
26-year-old Tatiana Didenko was pushing her son in a baby carriage as she strolled across the town square with her husband when the pavement caved in, creating a hole a few metres deep with fast-flowing water running below it.
Didenko's husband managed to pull his wife clear, but little Kirill Didenko fell out of his carriage into the rushing waters.
Emergency services have found the child's boots and the hood of his jacket, and hopes of finding him alive were low.
Locals started bringing flowers and toys to the square, with many clearly shocked.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MAN, BRYANSK CITIZEN, NO NAME GIVEN, SAYING:
"Why was there a wash out in the drainage pipe? And how can you possibly fall through the ground so deeply? How can we fall through when we are standing right here on the pavement?"
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) WOMAN, BRYANSK CITIZEN, NO NAME GIVEN, SAYING:
"The child is gone. So we are standing here, thinking, 'Will anyone be held responsible for that?'"
Authorities have initiated a criminal case on the grounds of "causing death by negligence".
