Launching some 24 tons of fireworks from dozens of barges, the spectacular fireworks delighted Brazilians and tourists alike.
Beaches became crowded from Friday onwards as tens of thousands flocked to Rio de Janeiro for one of the world's largest fireworks display.
Crowds were estimated at two million revellers.
Rio's spectacular fireworks display was transmitted live around the world.
