Large crowds were gathering to welcome 2012 beneath Sydney's stormy skies long before organisers had completed the finishing touches for the big night.
The Australian city plans to mark the dawn of the new year with a massive fireworks display.
The city's mayor is confident the whole event's going to be an eye-opener.
SOUNDBITE: Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, saying (English):
"It's been 15 months in the preparation. Thousands of people working on it. An amazing amount of creative talent from our creative team as well as our technical team. As you know, it's the largest free event in Australia. A great event for Sydney, and to promote Australia."
The shopping list has been huge.
Seven tonnes of fireworks, 11,000 aerial shells, 25,000 "shooting comets" and 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects.
Officials say it's cost six million dollars but it's worth every cent.
