ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Firefighters tried to tame a giant blaze at a gunpowder warehouse in Myanmar on Thursday (December 29) but were unable to save 17 people who died in the fire.
Police and fire officials said 80 people were also injured and among the dead were three fireman.
The explosion caused a massive inferno and spewed smoke that was only brought under control by late morning, officials said.
A police officer, who declined to be named, told Reuters 12 men and five women had been confirmed dead and further deaths were expected.
The blast occurred at around 2 a.m. in Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township in the east of Yangon, Myanmar's former capital and its main commercial center.
