Patti Smith celebrates Jean Genet
Patti Smith made a surprise appearance at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
The legendary singer-songwriter celebrated French writer and political activist Jean Genet's birthday with a 40-minute performance.
Genet was born on December 19, 1910 and died in 1986 in a Paris hotel.
Smith says she was saluting the Frenchman because he was not appropriately acknowledged during his lifetime.
(UPSOUND: Patti Smith, saying "Happy birthday Jean Genet".)
This is the second year that Smith has paid tribute to Genet at the MoMA.
