Security camera footage shows the drama unfold in Wenzou, eastern China.
The five-year-old girl circled on the screen was said by witnesses to be angry with her mother, and refusing to get up off the road.
Seconds later a car comes around the corner and drives straight over the child.
First the distraught driver leaps out to help the girl.
Eventually passers-by join the rescue effort, lifting and rocking the vehicle until the child is released.
She was taken to hospital but said to have suffered only minor injuries.
It's in stark contrast to video footage in November that showed a two-year-old run over by a van being ignored by passing people.
That incident ignited a public outcry over what some said highlighted the immorality of modern society.
