His last outing as Sherlock Holmes - won Robert Downey Jr. a Golden Globe.
Now on the eve of award season he's back as the eccentric detective - alongside Jude Law, who reprises his role as Watson.
"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" looks set to be a box office hit like its predecessor, but Downey reckons his mind is not on possible trophy glory.
SOUNDBITE: Robert Downey Jr., actor, saying (English):
"I'm thinking it's a lovely night in London I tend not to think that way, I just, honestly, I don't really care about that stuff, I really like it when audiences enjoy movies that to me is fifty times more important that an Oscar.''
SOUNDBITE: Jude Law, actor, saying (English):
''I think that is the reason these characters have been so popular, I think we are all like both of them so when we read them there are days when we are like Watson and we're sensible and we're down to earth and we're stubborn but trustworthy and there are other days when we want to be mad people and experiment with our eccentricities.''
This time the duo's adventure takes them across Europe in a story that involves a new criminal master mind and a Gypsy fortune teller!
Guy Ritchie is back in the director's chair.
While working on this picture he became a dad again and admitted that as well as being the boss on set he felt like a father figure to the project.
SOUNDBITE: Guy Ritchie, director, saying (English):
''They sort of came together hand in hand, poor fella has had to live with this film since he popped out you know, but I love it, you know, it's great.''
Ahh, well that's sweet. The movie is out on December 16, and we'll have to wait until next year to see if it wins any silverware.
