The 84-year-old pontiff is here to celebrate mass on the finaly leg of three-day African trip.
During the ceremony, Benedict called on the continent's leaders to shun corruption and use natural resources for the good of their people.
The pope was in Africa to sign a major policy document that calls for justice and equality across the region.
The pope urged his listeners "to be attentive to the cry of the poor, the weak and the outcast".
He also sent a special greeting to "those affected by AIDS or other illnesses, to all those forgotten by society".
