Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old actress who is married to fellow Bollywood superstar Abhishek Bachchan was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Monday.
Abhishek Bachchan announced the birth of his daughter to fans on a social networking site.
The couple had been keen to keep pregnancy rumours at bay and didn't confirm the news until June.
Indian media was exposed to strict coverage restrictions but national newspapers nevertheless reported on the birth with front-page headlines.
The Bachchans belong to India's most famous Bollywood dynasty and have enjoyed huge success with their films at foreign film festivals such as Cannes.
