Freeways were closed and flights cancelled in Beijing on Sunday after heavy fog covered the city. The fog lasted several hours and affected provinces in north and east China.

Heavy fog is shrouding several northern and eastern Chinese regions Monday, shutting down freeways and affecting more than 110 flights in Beijing.

At one point, visibility in Beijing was reduced to about 650 feet.

The foggy weather hit the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, and affected five other provinces, according to the Central Meteorological Station.

Twenty-five flights from Beijing's international airport were canceled and 88 others delayed Sunday.

The fog forced a temporary closure of six freeways in Beijing, according to local traffic police.

Beginning last Friday, fog expanded from the Liao River Plain in the north to central and eastern China, nearly covering the entire area within two days.

The fog is forecast to burn off by noon on Monday.
