Kansas City's Roman Catholic bishop, Robert Finn, is charged with failing to promptly report child pornography on a priests' computer.
Finn, the highest ranking US church official implicated thus far, could face a year in jail for the offence.
Prosecutors say he became aware of child pornography images on the computer of this man, Reverend Shawn Ratigan, last December but failed to notify authorities.
Finn's lawyer has entered a plea of not guilty and the bishop has vowed to fight the charges.
