National Transitional Council fighters battle door-to-door and street-by-street in Sirte - against Gaddafi loyalists fighting to hold on to their leader's hometown.
Making their way down flooded roads - the NTC fighters fired on positions held by pro-Gaddafi fighters holed up in just two small areas of the Libyan city.
But, in fierce, close-range battles, the anti-Gaddafi fighters made gradual advances.
At least four Libyan interim government fighters died on Wednesday and 51 were wounded -- overwhelming hospital staff at a field hospital outside of Sirte.
After a month of fighting, the NTC hopes to overcome the resistance in the coastal town - declare liberation - and move towards political transition.
Gaddafi loyalists have fought tenaciously in Sirte - one of just two major towns they still control after the fall of the capital Tripoli.
