After three decades of making music, iconic rock group R.E.M. said they have decided to "call it a day" in a posting on their official website.
The band's statement read: "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."
The group's original line-up consisted of lead singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bass player Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, who left the band and retired from the music scene in 1997.
Since forming in 1980, the alternative rock pioneers have released 15 albums and produced a string of classic hits including "Losing My Religion", "It's the End of the World as We Know It", "Man on the Moon" and "Everybody Hurts".
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
Their last album "Collapse into Now" was released earlier this year.
