On a night of surprises that brought a slew of newcomers to the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards podium, "Mad Men" won best drama series for a fourth straight year but the waiting got tense as the 1960s advertising drama lost out in all the acting, writing and directing races. The story was different for "Modern Family." Along with its best comedy win, the ABC mockumentary about three assorted couples and their children brought first-time wins for Julie Bowen and her screen husband Ty Burrell in the supporting acting slots, and Emmys for directing and writing. Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet won her first Emmy for her lead role in the HBO miniseries "Mildred Pierce." But the British period show "Downton Abbey," shown on PBS, was the miniseries winner, giving it a total of six Emmys overall.
Dolores Hope, wife of late U.S. entertainer Bob Hope, died on Monday (September 19) at the age of 102. Hope, a singer who put her career on hold after her marriage, died of natural causes in Los Angeles. Bob Hope died in July 2003 at the age of 100.
Lady Gaga leads the way in the nominations for this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. The pop singer has picked up nominations in six categories including best live, best pop and best female. She's followed by Katy Perry and Bruno Mars who have both picked up four nominations. This year's ceremony is to be held at Belfast's Odyssey Arena on November 6.
"Two and a Half Men" star Jon Cryer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, hours before its ninth season premiere on CBS. Cryer made his film debut by starring in the 1984 romantic comedy "No Small Affair," along side Demi Moore. Cryer has received six consecutive Emmy nominations as outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for "Two and a Half Men," winning in 2009. Cryer has also performed on the stage on Broadway, London and Los Angeles.
