Egypt: A Massive Wind Power Project | Global 3000

Egypt hopes to cover a fifth of its energy needs through renewable power sources by 2020. To do that, the country is partnering with EU nations. The desert land has plenty of sun and is an ideal location for wind turbines.A wind park project in Zafarana on the Red Sea shows the way of the future. With an output capacity of more than 430 megawatts, it's the largest wind park in Africa. Denmark, Germany and Spain provided financial support for the project - based in a location where the wind blows over 8.5 meters per second. Nineteen students from Arab countries and Germany studying renewable energies are set to help lead the project in the future. Global 3000 met up with the students in March at the University of Kassel, where they continued their studies following the political unrest in Egypt. They hope the new Egyptian government will also support expansion of wind power projects in the country.
