Garden of Stone

A haunting song by English folk musician Leon Rosselson - a song I have loved for 30 years. Rosselson's lyrics are are always a treat and I love the "progressive" nature of the chorus in this one Winter is silent, the birds have all flown Echoes and shadows of times I have known Watching the wind as I sit here alone Here I am safe in my Garden of Stone I have built towers, I have built palaces I have robbed oceans of their wealth Giant wheels are turning where I have had power I have dug treasure from the earth Echoes and shadows of times I have known Watching the wind as I sit here alone Walls within walls round the things that I own No-one can enter my Garden of Stone I have planted empires where deserts were Armies have fought at my command I have seen men follow me calling my name Begging for favours at my hand Watching the wind as I sit here alone Walls within walls round the things that I own Death cannot enter and time is unknown Nothing can change in my Garden of Stone No wind can shake my marble monument My flowers of stone can never fade Silent are the statues that follow me now Fixed in their motionelss parade Walls within walls round the things that I own Death cannot enter and time is unknown Here I will sit like a king on my throne Lord of the world in my Garden of Stone
