"Artistic squats" -- where an empty house is occupied by an artists' collective -- have traditionally been outside the the law, but in France they're increasingly finding a measure of legal support. Of the 25 such squats in the Paris area, a dozen have some form of legal status, granted thanks to "occupation rights" -- and for some, this new status is a fertile ground for the emergence of a flourishing counter-culture.
