At 77, Michael Caine is one of Britain's most recognisable and respected actors. Now the legendary Italian Job star has been given the highest cultural honour in France.
He was made Commander of Arts and Letters by French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand in Paris on Thursday.
"I don't know, I've always had a sort of audience in France, I knew that. But I didn't know how much they knew of me," Caine said.
He added: "[It's] a surprise for me that they know me so well enough to give me this incredible honour."
The actor is in the country with his wife Shakira Baksh to promote his film Harry Brown, which came out in the UK in November 2009.
Caine recently said he would retire when he reaches the age of 80.
