To extinguish the fire of graphite, the Soviets sent helicopters to bombard the fire with radiation-absorbing materials (sand, boron, dolomite). It was a difficult task to achieve this small target from a helicopter. Directly above the reactor, a lot of these pilots breathed the radioactive particles and died as a result of their exposure to radiation (comments in English).
