Pentecostal churches have taken off around the globe. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God has grown particularly fast, but its financial dealings have come under fire from some.
Edir Macedo used to be an employee of a state lottery company. In the 1970s he set up the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Rio de Janeiro. Nowadays, he lives primarily in the United States and is a multi-millionaire. The church has been particularly successful in former Portuguese colonies, such as Mozambique.
