Muslim women react strongly to Fatwa

Twenty-eight years ago when Mariyambi Sherkhan lost her husband there was no one from the community who came to help her. She, her two kids one son, and the other daughter had no one to call their own. But when Mariyambi steeped out of her house to find work, the community appeared from nowhere and asked her to wear a veil. “They told me I am a Muslim and hence I should be wearing a veil if I want to work. I flatly refused them and asked them to mind their own business,” recalls Mariyambi. The woman now 55-year-old has managed to acquire a permanent job at the GPO, draws a decent salary educated her kids and even got them married.
