This festival is carried out in Honor of Savitri, a legendary wife who escaped death for her husband's life.This ritual is carried out for Savitri and Satyavana who was her husband and was destined to die within one year. Yama who is the god of death was implored by Savitri.She finally wins her husbands life back from the god of death due to her sheer determination and devotion to her husband. Strictly speaking, Vat Puja is fasting observed for 3 daysThey wear new clothes and bangles.Women throng at the nearest banyan trees in their locality. They pour holy water from the Ganges and tie red threads around the tree. They pray and wish for long life of their spouses after offering fruits and flowers to the tree. Women read and recite “Savatri Katha” in the evening and do ritual puja. After that they eat the roots of Vat vriksha along with water. After breaking their fast, fruits, clothes and such other articles are given in charity in a bamboo basket to the Brahmin’s.
