Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that striker Wayne Rooney has "no chance" of taking part in Wednesday's Champions League quarter final decider against Bayern Munich.
The England striker sustained an ankle injury in United's 2-1 defeat to the German side in the first leg at Old Trafford. But reports had suggested he could make an earlier than expected return.
Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters: "The medical team have done a fantastic job but it is an ankle injury the same as any other ankle injury.
"I don't think he will be on the bench although he might talk me into it, it is a difficult one."
John O'Shea is expected to play for the first time since November as United look to overturn the deficit to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the third year running.
