Mortuary workers held for dumping babies' bodies

Two mortuary workers have been detained in China after 21 babies' bodies were found floating in a river.

They were discovered washed ashore, and authorities suspect they were dumped there as "medical waste" by local hospitals.

An initial investigation showed that eight of the 21 babies wore identification tags on their feet tracing them back to a hospital in nearby Jining in Shandong province.

The other 13 are still unidentified.

Some of them were wrapped in plastic bags, with at least one of which having "medical waste" written on it.

The families had paid the hospital mortuary workers to dispose of the babies' bodies, but they dumped them at the river instead.

Three top hospital officials have reportedly either been sacked or suspended and the government has ordered the Jining Municipal Health Bureau to make a public apology.
