Fire Destroys Abandoned Textile Mill in India
  • 14 years ago
Fire gutted a closed textile mill in India's western city of Mumbai on Wednesday.

The fire broke out at around 12 noon at Gold Mohur Mill, a closed government-owned textile spinning and weaving unit.

Over 10 firefighters battled the blaze for four hours before bringing it under control.

Fire personnel suspect that a short circuit triggered the fire, but locals allege that the blaze was intentionally set

One local resident says the fire brigade was late to arrive on the scene and did not respond to emergency telephone calls.

[Anil Mane, Eyewitness]:
"They (sic) intentionally set the mill on fire…there was a report in the newspaper that the owners are planning to start the mill soon…the fire broke out at 12 noon (local time), we were continuously calling the fire brigade and they didn't pick up the call and they also came late and went straight to factory even after knowing that no one was there in the factory…they (owners) have insurance and we have nothing."

While no casualties have been reported, shops in the vicinity of the building have been closed as a precautionary measure.
