Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya (1923-1941) was a Russian partisan. She was captured by the Germans who interrogated her trying to find out the location of other partisans. She did not give the enemy any information and kept complete silence during hard tortures. She said a speech from the scaffold calling the Russians to fight the occupants and suggesting the Germans to surrender.
Kosmodemyansky family name was constructed by joining the names of two saints Cosmas and Damian (Kosma and Demyan in Russian). Kosmodemyansky were priests of Russian Orthodox Church since 17th century. Zoya's grandfather Saint Piotr Kosmodemyansky was murdered in 1918 by comissars for his opposition to blasphemy.
