00:27Definitely, we know the standards, we haven't been meeting the standards of the club and
00:32what we've kind of set in the last few years.
00:36So we know that it's important for us to get the club back where it should be.
00:42We feel it's always been the same here, you need to win every week and we haven't been
00:47doing that.
00:47So we understand that that's not good enough and we know how important it is to get on
00:52and run a form and build some momentum and yeah, hopefully we can do that.
00:58I do appreciate this, this could be a long answer and a lot goes into it, but why do
01:02you think they understand there's a lot where they should be at the moment?
01:07Look, there's been a lot of ins and outs and people are probably still feeling out like
01:15the club and I don't think everyone understands.
01:23when they first come really, how big the club is and it can take a while and the hard
01:28thing is you don't really have time to settle in, but it's a difficult thing to do when
01:33you lose probably close to ten players and ten new players come in, it takes time.
01:40So we just need to kind of keep pushing and get back to the place where we were a couple
01:51of the players.
01:51A while now you know the standards of the club, how important is it for guys like yourself,
01:54Colin McGregor, Cade and Tierney to kind of impress that on the new players, that they
01:58aren't there yet but they can be?
02:00Yeah, I don't want to sound like I'm blaming the new players, that's not the case at all.
02:06But yeah, we do need to show and we do need to take responsibility because the responsibility
02:11lies with the more experienced players and players who have experienced what the club
02:16is like and we probably do need to lead by example a bit more.
02:21Oh definitely, definitely.
02:23Because you do get the feeling that the fans are frustrated and we get that, we understand
02:29that and we agree with them.
02:31Like you know, they have a right to be frustrated with how the results have been and it's just
02:36been stop start, you know.
02:39So two wins at home in four days would be amazing for us and it would really lift the mood
02:45going into that international window and then we know we have like obviously a really busy
02:50period over the winter and to come back in sort of good spirits would be really good for
02:57us, you know.
02:57It would help us kick on through the winter.
03:00Yeah, Cameron back alongside you on the weekend for 90 minutes.
03:02How big a boost is that for you personally to have someone like that alongside you?
03:07Yeah, it's great to play with Cam, you know.
03:09You know, he's got so much experience and he's a top player.
03:15I've always enjoyed playing with him.
03:16So, you know, it was good to see him back and I look forward to playing with whoever's
03:23in the team, you know.
03:25We're all good players but it's good to see Cam back and hopefully now he can get a good
03:30run.
03:30Some people have good and bad games, different people have good and bad games every week.
03:37I think it's about trying to find consistency and also I think confidence comes into it.
03:43You know, when things aren't going your way it can be difficult to keep confidence high
03:48and that in turn if you're maybe doubting yourself a little bit can contribute to lack of form.
03:56But I don't like point fingers or kind of pick apart who's been playing well, who hasn't.
04:03You know, we're a team and overall the level just hasn't been quite good enough and we're just slightly off
04:09it.
04:09And I think if we can turn that around, it'll be good.
04:14There have been a few comparisons drawn with last season, you know, difficult European campaign at points.
04:20But do you feel that's overplayed? Liam, obviously you're still four points clear at the top.
04:24If you look at this point last season you were chasing hearts.
04:27Do you feel that it is different to last season? You are in a better place than you were this
04:31than last season?
04:32Yeah, there's definitely similarities but it is different, you know, it's a different group of players and we are obviously
04:42not happy with dropping points in the last couple of domestic games
04:47and we wish we were further ahead but we are still top of the league and I think that's where
04:55we want to be.
04:55It's just obviously in Europe it's been difficult. So it's different, it's different to last season but I can see
05:04the similarities there.
05:07Is there any more questions?
05:09Ancak bu sezon man başka bir sezon.
05:11Okay, newspaper guys, can I get you right out the back at the serving area and the manager will be
05:16up shortly?
05:17Thank you.
05:17Thank you.
05:26Hi there, we'll just kick off please. Gordon.
05:29Martin, the club announced yesterday you went along to see a supporters club, you and members of the board.
05:36I wonder how that was as an experience for you?
05:39No, the – I wanted to go to it, I didn't know about it until the 11th hour but yeah,
05:47just wanted to go down to it and essentially experience what the supporters are feeling and see how we can
05:56do something about it.
05:57I think you said the questioning was hard but fair. I wondered what elements you found hard, what were the
06:04main gripes?
06:04But no, the questions are – I think it's straightforward, I think you would know what they would be.
06:10And I think that – I think they were fair, absolutely.
06:13And I think that – I think that the board as a whole tried to answer them as honestly as
06:20they possibly could.
06:21Have plans to do that again?
06:23More funds, how do you –
06:25No, well, it's funny enough, it's the second time. There was a similar thing in Cork way back quite some
06:36months ago, like pre-season.
06:38And so – but yeah, and that was – I think it was a close season or pre-season, but
06:46so I went down to that.
06:50And no, so I don't – if the time permits, then that's fine. If we've got a busy schedule and
06:57they've organised it in a certain time, then obviously I wouldn't be able to make it.
07:01Obviously it was just one group, but I wonder what conclusions you reached about the way fans are feeling at
07:07the moment, and I wonder if any of that surprised you?
07:10No, I don't think anything really surprised me at all. I think that the questions that they were asking –
07:16I think that the board would have been expecting those questions to be asked,
07:25and obviously hoping to answer them in the best possible manner or as honestly as they could.
07:32Can this be – I mean, obviously we weren't there. Can it be taken from –
07:35No, no, no, I – well, no, my job doesn't depend on going to meetings like that. My job depends
07:42on results. It really does. And I cannot forget that. That's the point.
07:49No, if I am the manager and the next meeting comes up and time allows, I don't mind – I
07:55actually don't mind going to it. But it's – that's – you know, my job is depending on results.
08:04Yeah, Martin, you're in the middle of this run for you as a manager. How easy or otherwise is it
08:08to kind of talk to the players, lift the players' spirits almost, when you have been on a run of,
08:13what is it, three wins and ten games?
08:15Yeah, for Celtic generally it's – it can be a trying time. But we have to get through it. I've
08:25experienced these in the past. And yeah, it's a matter of – I think maybe giving the players confidence again
08:34to go and play their very, very best, play their best under difficult circumstances.
08:41You know that sometimes it's difficult when you are – when your confidence is not absolutely at its top and
08:49that you are – you know, you're fighting with yourself all the time.
08:52So I think that's the case. And it's – I think a couple of the lads were saying it's a
08:57wee bit like when I stepped in here. First of all, I lost a bit of confidence from Hearts and
09:03Dundee. And that was – it was just to restore that. So if that's the case, if it was that
09:08last year, maybe it's just similar this time.
09:12And speaking of confidence, you know, on Sunday you made a lot of changes looking for solutions. Do you feel
09:17at the moment that you know your best XI to go out there and win again?
09:20You know, I keep getting asked this question. And until I know exactly what everyone can do at the football
09:25club, then I probably won't – I won't know that. I won't know that.
09:31And it's not always known about your best team because we've had a lot of games and we do –
09:36we're rotating a bit as well to try and save some legs, save a little bit of energy.
09:41I think it will be – I think it's our ninth game in about 20-odd days or whatever the
09:47case may be. So we're in these competitions and we're trying to do our best. Yeah.
09:52But getting back to your point, I think, yeah, once each player has had an opportunity, for instance, La Tomba,
10:00you know, hasn't really had a proper opportunity.
10:03And once players get a couple of matches, then perhaps then you'll be able to make a decision. But your
10:10best team might be for a certain game and your best team for, let's say, European competition might be something
10:16else.
10:18Well, I mean, it'll be our fourth game. We need to get off the mark at some stage or another.
10:23I think that Liam and I would both come to that conclusion.
10:26But yes, I don't think that – I mean, I was told that, statistically speaking, that any team who's lost
10:35their first three games haven't made it through.
10:37So it doesn't augur brilliantly for us if that's the case. So if we go on for a fourth one,
10:43then that would be a world record then.
10:45But I know what he's saying. And I think that – I genuinely think when we get our best team
10:51or get all our players maybe by the next four or five weeks, if we can do that.
10:57But we're definitely running out of matches, no question. But we are capable of still qualifying if, let's say, ten
11:04points is the mark.
11:05It means you're having to – you really have to go away and win, not draw.
11:08How is the squad looking? Yang back in training this morning?
11:12Yang's done a little bit of training, yes. Maybe too early for him for tomorrow. Hopefully he's going to be
11:17around for Sunday.
11:18Definitely wants to be. And if Yang had his way, he would be – he'd even be thinking about tomorrow
11:23himself, you know.
11:25He's really keyed up for it now.
11:27What do you expect from your opponents tomorrow, Mark?
11:29Oh, gosh, wow. Okay, so I've watched them through. They didn't get an opportunity until after Sunday's game. But we've
11:39had people watching them, you know, both live and on television.
11:43And, yeah, a real handful, a real handful, no question. And I didn't realise this until I obviously started watching
11:51that the centre forward they have used to be here, the big fella.
11:56Yeah, yeah. So, I don't know whether he has a point to prove or we have a point to prove,
12:05but it'll be – yeah.
12:06And they've got obviously some really decent players and so far their points tally is terrific, you know.
12:15They've got seven points in the first three games, so they're flying in this competition.
12:19I think they might be slightly disappointed about their own league form, you know, where they're probably maybe expecting to
12:25be challenging a little bit closer.
12:27But it's early days, as I hear them say.
12:31Just going back to you going to the meeting on Monday night, I believe you were up at Ross County
12:35last night watching the B team play.
12:40It seems that you're very hands-on, manager Martin. Is that the way you've always been in your managerial career?
12:44And is that the way you plan to be for the rest of the season, the rest of your time
12:47at Celtic?
12:48Yeah. Well, I didn't – in my first spell years ago, I don't remember going to too many Celtic meetings,
12:55but then I'm not so sure that we had supposedly that set of crises, you know, at the time, if
13:02that's what you can call it.
13:04And so – but yeah, I am actually or used to be a very, very hands-on manager.
13:11And what I think I've said to you now, managing in a different manner to what I did before.
13:17So – but I wanted to see the players, primarily the players, you know.
13:22First of all, there's a couple of young lads who are trying to come through, like young Kennedy,
13:28lads like that there who I think have a chance – have a chance, that's all.
13:33They're young, and also we had Joel McGuinness playing a game after injury,
13:41and the two young lads from Chelsea, you know, who haven't played that much football even since summertime.
13:49So it was important for them. And I thought that – I thought the opposition were going to be very
13:53strong,
13:54which they were, and I have to say I thought – I thought Ross County played really well,
14:01really well to win the game, and deserved to win it. But it was great to see the game.
14:06Just finally for me, on that fan engagement, obviously the AGM is looming, usually comes around this time of the
14:14year.
14:14Are you looking to increase fan engagement before then?
14:17I know that you were here at the end of your first bell when the AGM happened to you.
14:22You know, are you hoping that this increased fan engagement would – I mean, you won't see a repeat of
14:25what happened last year?
14:26Well, I – honestly, I do not know that, and I don't know what the next meeting is.
14:33I don't know whether it's been in a diary set in a diary or not. It just – it happened
14:39to be that being around at the time,
14:42I wanted to go to it just – as I said, just for those experiences, just to see exactly what
14:48the fans are asking for,
14:51or demanding, or things like this here. And I don't know when the next one, Ian, do you know?
14:57Not sure, but seriously, if it's – if time permits, and they want me to go to it, I don't
15:07mind.
15:08Well, I do understand it, absolutely. And I can – I feel that that's true. We are aware, as you
15:16say, we were 30 minutes away.
15:19In fact, we were an hour, and we should really be there. And draw some sort of consolation from the
15:25fact that last keep winning their matches,
15:27or have won two and have got six points on the board. So, they were, as we said before, they
15:32were a very fine team.
15:33I still think the sides in the – in the sides that – for instance, Benfica. I think Benfica –
15:39well, I know this because I was speaking to them –
15:42– they are massively disappointed that they're not in the Champions League themselves, and they could go on and win
15:47the competition.
15:48So, the games in the – I don't think – I think there are certain sides in the Europa League
15:54who are capable of playing in the Champions League.
15:56But that doesn't mean that we're – we haven't a disappointment. And you're – you're right in your questioning.
16:05Thank you.
16:06Thank you very much. Thank you.
