Democrats have won control of both chambers of the United States Congress following the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major change in Washington's political balance.

The party flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina, while gaining more than two dozen House districts.

The incoming Democratic majority will gain control of congressional committees and legislative priorities, along with greater authority to investigate the Trump administration, scrutinise government spending and challenge presidential appointments.

President Trump retains his constitutional powers, but his administration will face stronger congressional oversight and new obstacles to its legislative agenda.

Featuring Deutsche Welle reporting and election-night remarks from Texas Senator-elect James Talarico.
